Care NewsA Polyclinic is where patients can see a range of specialists under one roof e.g. gp’s, gynaecologists, ear, nose and throat specialists, urologists, dentists, opticians, etc.The idea, which is common for example in Germany, is now seriously being consider by the government as the place where diabetes treatment and minor surgery and other tests can be carried out leaving the hospitals to concentrate on more serious and complicated care. It is the intention to set up 150 polyclinics, which will run from 8.00am – 8.00pm, seven days a week. The Conservative party has estimated that approx 1700, a fifth of all GP surgeries, would be under threat from the polyclinics. Currently there are 8,261 GP Practices in England of which 1,546 are in London. The Assessment Procedures used throughout the country to assess if people can receive support, differs from area to area. The support is assessed and offered, but in the main the views of people eligible to receive support are not asked on the criteria that determines as to whether they can receive help.
A two year pilot project undertaken by the University of the West of England and the University of Warwick have found that bringing a community nursing and physiotherapy team into residential care homes for older people improves their quality of life, reduces hospital admissions and can save approx. £37.00 per week* * reduced hospital admissions, delayed transfers to nursing homes.
