Figures released by the Dept. of Health show that there are 5,538 Modern Matrons in post.
The Matron role was introduced in April 2001 as part of an NHS plan to improve patient experience. The leader role was also to ensure better care faster, to make hospitals cleaner, more comfortable and friendlier places and to provide patients with better information and choice.
Homecare services provided by local authorities have more than trebled in cost since 1997, and a coalition of charities have found that many elderly people are having to make a choice between care and food. Authorities can raise finance from people who are assessed as being able to pay for all or part of their care and the amount that was raised in 2006 was £380m. compared with an amount raised of £102m in 1997. Most of this money is contributed by people over the age of 65 years and represents an increase of 273%.

According to the TUC, about 3.3 million people are now working more than 48 hours a week, a rise of 180,000 in the first three months of this year.

Interesting Information
The number of people who “do not attend” outpatient appointment clinics is approx. 8.8% of people given appointments. Statistic relevant to quarter 4 of 2007/2008.During a week in September 2007 the independent home care sector provided 78% of the total number of homecare hours in England. Gross public expenditure on homecare has increased to £2,642 billion.

Freedom of Information legislation has shown that our local hospital, The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, has revealed that it lost 17,000 “bed days” last year as a result of bed blocking, almost doubling the number from the previous year. In January alone 80 people who were ready to be discharged into the community were “bed blocking”
