After discussion in Brussels last week the UK’s opt-out on the 48 hour working week is to remain in force. It will, as it has been in the past, be reviewed again in the future.



The Cabinet Office has published guidance to help organisations that use volunteers. There has been misunderstanding as to which volunteers do need to have a CRB check, about why they require one and the result has been that the grey area of CRB checks have put some people off volunteering. This new guidance is meant to help. Further information can be obtained from http://www.crb.gov.uk



UCAS, the university admissions service advises that 19 of the 33 physiotherapist training universities still have vacancies for courses to start in September this year.



The following councils have narrowed their eligibility criteria for social care meaning that people with lesser needs will no longer receive assistance with their social care. The councils are:
  • Bromley, City of London, East Riding of Yorkshire, Hammersmith and Fulham, Hartlepool, Kingston upon Thames, Medway, Trafford and Wandsworth.
Two councils, Nottinghamshire and North Yorkshire have widened their criteria.

Only four councils provide care for people with the lowest level of need: Calderdale, Darlington, Isles of Scilly and Sunderland.



Allied Healthcare International has won a contract to provide up to 3,500 hours of home-based care services a week to Surrey County Council.

Reviews and risk assessments have taken place in Suffolk, Norfolk, Coventry and London.

Manual Handling Training Session has taken place in Norfolk.

New clients have commenced in:

  • Stockport. An elderly lady (age 94) recovering from a stroke, Care Manager Alan Wilson 01603281916. Salary £576.00pw inc.

  • Norfolk. An elderly lady, generally frail, (age 84). Care Manager Jackie Maaz, 01603 281917. Salary £565.00pw inc.
Potential carers have been interviewed in Norwich.

Interesting Information

Scotland has one of the highest rates of stroke in the world. Approximately 14,000 have a stroke in Scotland each year.
