Increasing petrol prices are having a significant effect on domiciliary care and many care workers and the care agencies they work for are finding that they are subsidizing travel expenses. Many domiciliary care agencies have contracts with their local authorities and the hourly rate for these agencies is fixed with no allowances made for the increasing cost of fuel. (A litre of petrol cost 95.90p in June 2006, June 2008 the cost is now 118.90p AA figures).

Private clients on direct payments are also finding their carers requesting higher mileage costs.

Able Community Care includes in its costs on a general basis an amount of £30.00 per week for travel, we have recently ask this to be increased to £35.00pw.

Many people who receive Direct Payments to buy in their own care are at risk. Insufficient checks are carried out on their carers and the situation is open to abuse.

The General Social Care Council will be consulting on a system of regulation for personal assistants/carers employed by people using Direct Payments.

Any regulations will have to preserve personal choice, be flexible and enable people to make informed choice.

Interesting Information

Question asked of Able Community Care last week
"Is it mandatory for taxi drivers to have a Criminal Records Check (CRB) check?"

Answer : All licensed taxi drivers who apply for permission to operate in a local authority area and have the Council license details on their cab, will have been CRB checked. It is a mandatory requirement. However, for taxi drivers who are unlicensed by the statutory body of a Council, it is likely that they will not have applied for the CRB check.

Incapacity Benefit: One in every fifteen workers, 2.7 million people are reliant on this Benefit.

Approx. 8.5 million patients have osteoarthritis in the UK We hope you have enjoyed reading this and "see you next week".
