Care News
Devon County Council is intending to transfer the management of its care homes to the private health group, Shaw Healthcare. The council has 24 residential care homes for older people which will transfer.
Care providers can complain about decisions made by the Commission for Social Care Commission (CSCI) with reference to their organisations but the chances of being successful and having the complaint upheld are small.
In the year 2007/2008 out of 107 complaints only 4 were upheld in full or part.
Of the 35 complaints about CSCI which were referred to the Parliamentary Ombudsman only 4 were upheld.
There were 78 appeals by care providers against CSCI regulatory decisions and only three of these were successful.
In 2006/2007 there were 5 prosecutions against care providers but this has dropped to 1 for 2007/2008.
Diabetes
More than one in ten deaths amongst 20 – 79 year olds in England can be attributed to diabetes. If current trends continue, by 2010 the figure will have risen to one in eight of the population in England.

Interesting Information
In 2007 there were 12,550 social work jobs advertised in Community Care (7,570) and the Guardian (4,980). These were from the local authority sector (7,008) and from the voluntary and private sector (4,713). (Source: Community Care)The Able Community Care Question:

Answer : All ferry operators are obliged to provide facilities for disabled travellers. The time to enquire as to what is available to wheelchair travellers is before you book your ticket. You can do this by calling the port you wish to depart from and the ferry company, either by calling them or by looking at their website and emailing any questions to them.
