In 2002 HM Revenue and Customs it was believed were planning to introduce VAT on private hearing aid supply. Common sense prevailed and this did not happen.

In 2009 the Hearing Aid Council, a regulatory body, is to be abolished and it is understood, although unconfirmed, that HM R&C are again looking at re-introducing VAT on the full cost of hearing aids.

Laing and Buisson have reported that in the last year, spending by individuals on private healthcare (non cosmetic) such as hips and knees fell by nearly £30m. The spend for 2007 was £345m. The last significant downturn in this spending was in the recession of the early 1990’s.


Carers UK surveyed people who receive direct payments from social services on a "Choice or Chore" direction. Some of the findings were as follows.

Positive responses re direct payments:

  • 73% found that the care they purchase with the direct payment is better at meeting needs than their previous service.
  • 46% can use the direct payment flexibly to pay for things that were not available from the council.
  • 48% said they have more time for themselves to enable them to work or have a social life.
Negative responses re direct payments:
  • 80% did not have contingency plans in case something goes wrong.
  • 21% say that they have less free time since taking on a direct payment.
  • 25% waited more than a year from making an enquiry to getting their direct payment.
(The survey was based on 639 carers in receipt of social services care.)

Interesting Information

The Anthony Nolan Trust, which runs the Bone Marrow Register currently has details of 392,000 people on their Register. Worldwide there are 2.5 million people on similar registers. At any one time, there are approximately 16,000 patients throughout the world who are looking to find a suitable bone marrow donor.


In 2028 the number of people living in Greater London over the age of 65 years will have risen to one million. The number of people over the age of 85 years wil be approximately one hundred and forty thousand.
