Cuts in care homes funding hits district nurses
Pressure on district nurses is increasing because fewer people are being looked after in care homes, according to a leading care homes expert. A report by the NHS Information Centre, Community Care Statistics 2008, showed  the number of people living in residential or nursing care homes dropped by 4% to 239,100 between 2007 and 2008. Frank Ursell, Registered Nursing Home Association chief executive, said government drives to reduce local authority funded placements was forcing those in need into sheltered accommodation.'The impact will be felt by district nursing which is already oversubscribed,' he said.

Independent homecare providers currently provide over six million hours of care per week This figure was given in an article in the Public Service Review – Health Issue 17 on November 7th.

The article looks at the struggle faced by many homecare providers and explores the possible reality that the cost of care will be more important than it’s quality. The article written by Colin Angel the UKHCA’s Head of Policy can be found at: http://www.publicservice.co.uk and then search for Jury still out on homecare providers' future.
