The Scottish Care Commission have found that one in five care services in Scotland have unsafe procedures in place for staff recruitment. The problems found included care staff being employed without the proper checks being made with reference to their ability to work as a carer, criminal record checks not being made and references not being verified. The Voluntary Sector plays a huge role in helping to care for elderly and disabled people and the need for their services is on the increase. However, falling incomes, especially prevalent at a time of high unemployment and an anticipated recession means that they ask the government for a financial bail-out sum of £500m. This has been refused by the government this week but a "plan of action" has been promised for the New Year.
Some suggestions are that charities should be able to recover VAT which is costing the sector up to £600m per annum and a reform of Gift Aid where up to £700m goes unclaimed annually.
Meanwhile charities and voluntary groups in Scotland are facing a cut of 70% in Lottery funding, reducing from £90m to £25m, a reduction of 70%. The funding loss is being directed towards the cost of the 2012 London Olympics.

Able Community Care began providing Tony, who lived in the North West, with a live in care package in January 2001. Tony required live in carers because he was suffering from MS. Last week Tony died peacefully in his sleep at home.
Within the last couple of weeks we have sent out a form to all our clients concerning aids and equipment within their home. To date we have received over 45% back, thank you. Once we have received the forms back we can update our records and identify any further training needs that our carers may have in relation to individual pieces of equipment.
Interesting Information
People who make it to the age of 100 may indeed have some "good genes" that they pass on their children, according to a new study.The study, of more than 600 older U.S. adults, found that the children of centenarians tended to live longer and were substantially less likely to develop diabetes or suffer a heart attack or stroke.
