Elderly people and their families spent £6billion of their own savings on the state care system in 2008. The money, half of all the spending on care for the elderly is raised via the financial means test assessment or by “top up” fees.
Under the financial means test any person with savings or property worth more than £22,500 must pay for their own care. The report from the Commission for Social Care Inspection said that private spending on the care system now matches that of the Governments contribution.
Two new London Underground maps have been published to help disabled, pregnant and elderly passengers. A Tube Toilet map and a new Step-free Tube Guide.
The information contained in the maps includes information as to where you can change between lines without coming into contact with steps or escalators. (London Underground currently has 54 step free stations). It also gives information on accessible toilets for wheelchair users and whether they have baby changing facilities.
Other accessibility information products that TfL (Transport for London) produces includes:
- A Guide to Accessibility for all London's public transport: the Tube; buses; Docklands Light Railway (DLR); London Overground; trams; London river boats
- Dial-a-Ride, taxis and private hire
- Large print and audio Tube maps

Interesting Information / Statistics
Did you know?- There are around 9.8 million disabled people in the UK, that's over 15% of the population.
- There are 2.3 million blue badge holders in the UK, indicating that they have a significant mobility problem.
- Mobility vehicles represent around10% of the UK car market.
- Over 5.5 million disabled people are of working age, which represents 16% of the working population. However only 50% of disabled people of working age are in employment compared to 87% of non-disabled people of working age.
- By the year 2010, 40% of the UK population will be over 45 - the age at which the incidence of disability begins to increase significantly.
- The estimated annual purchasing power of people with disabilities is £40-£50 billion
- Over half the population over 75 has some kind of disability – 70% have difficulty walking or climbing stairs.
- 85% of disabled people in the UK were not born disabled, but became so in later life through accident or illness.
- 66% of disabled people are older people. In the next 50 years the number of over 60s will double and the number of over 80s will treble.
Question of the Week
"I read in the paper that an elderly, deaf gentleman died because he did not hear his smoke alarm go off. My Mother has poor hearing and I would like to know if you are aware of any smoke alarms or other equipment that are suitable for deaf people?"
Answer: There are smoke alarms that are suitable for people with hearing problems one of which works by flashing a warning and another type vibrates. For example, you can have a vibrating one, like a pad, under your pillow at night to alert you. In order to find out more about these alarms and to find out which one is most suitable for your Mother, give her local Fire and Rescue Service a call. In many areas they will arrange a visit and provide the alarms free of charge.
