Care NewsMore than 50% of disabled people who are of working age do not have a job. In order to try and reduce this figure Leonard Cheshire Disability has launched a new online resource "Suitability" which is a partnership between themselves, the Employers Forum on Disability and Jobsgopublic. The site which is an online job brokerage service aims to help disabled people find work. For further details on this and the help that is available go to: http://www.lcdsuitability.org 78% of publicly funded homecare is provided by the independent sector compared with 5% in 1993. The main purchasers of homecare are local authorities who are estimated to buy 80% of the hours of care provided by the independent sector. As at June 2008 there were 4,960 home care agencies registered in England and of these 84% were based in the private and voluntary sector. The Health Survey for England for 2007, commissioned by the NHS, has been published. The Survey looks at the nation's eating, drinking, exercise and smoking habits. You can look at the Survey at: http://www.equip.nhs.uk/custom/news.aspx One finding of interest is that the survey looked at the impact of smoking legislation introduced in July 2007. There was no significant difference in cigarette smoking prevalence after the implementation of the smokefree legislation on 1st July. Among smokers the mean number of cigarettes smoked per day did not fall significantly overall, but there were significant reductions among men aged 35 and over. However, these decreases were in contrast to a slight increase among men aged 16-34.
