It is estimated that 10% of care workers are migrant workers. Research by the COMPAS unit at Oxford University found that migrant workers had a good work ethic but there were concerns about language and cultural factors. Migrant workers are relied on to work in the care sector and it is estimated that the current figure of 126,000 currently working the number will rise to 195,000 in 2030.


Following on from the problems experienced by our Registered Manager and the problems associated with her Mother and entry into a care home for a few weeks, her Mother has been transferred to a further care home. No care plan or details of next of kin went with her.


The Sue Ryder Care charity was formed 54 years ago but for the last ten years they have been providing health and care in people's homes. Celebrating its tenth anniversary it advises that it now provides 1.4 million home visits and more than 650,000 hours per year.


The Aged Care Channel has just been launched which is a subscription television channel for care homes. The station provides 18 training programmes during the course of a year. Care staff will be able to ring in and ask questions in relation to each program. Some of the topics covered are:

  • Depression in older people
  • Teamwork
  • Falls prevention
  • Identifying and managing pain in residents
  • Infection control.
The advisory board has been overseen by people such as Martin Green of the English Community Care Association and Des Kelly of the National Care Forum.

A similar TV channel has been operating in Australia for the last six years.

A prospective client has been visited in Norfolk.

Refresher, in-house training has been given to Care Managers with reference to administration procedures re. medication.

Client reviews have taken place in Colchester and Mansfield.

Question of the Week
"My sister is losing her sight and I would like to help her maintain her independence. She is coming to stay with me soon and I want to try and show her how she can maintain her interest in domestic activity especially cooking. Do you know of where I can get any cooking items for her that she can use?"

Answer : The Royal National Institute of Blind People has many items that can be bought for cooks with impaired sight. For example you can purchase a Vocal Talking Kitchen Scale, cookbooks, measuring jugs and other items. They can be bought online at http://www.rnib.org.uk


Around 12 million people in China are blind, giving the country the largest visually impaired population in the world.


There are now 50 fully operational health centres that open from 7.00am – 10pm.
