Counsel and Care have found that more and more people have been calling their advice line with reference to relatives and friends who are lonely or isolated. There are many befriending schemes in the UK run by varying organisations from national ones to small, local organisations. Counsel and Care have now launched VitalLinks with the objective that all such schemes register with VitalLinks so that "friends" can be found for more lonely people.

For further details of VitalLinks go to Counsel and Care's website at: http://www.counselandcare.org.uk

The Oldie magazine has uncovered a study by the Society for Companion Animal Studies which reveals that two thirds of old people's homes don't allow residents to keep pets. The Labour MP, Nick Palmer, is using a 10-minute Bill to force care homes to take pets.

Everyone in England between the ages of 40 and 74 years will be invited for a free health check in order to help reduce deaths from diseases such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes and kidney disease. Such health conditions affect four million people across the UK and are responsible for a fifth of all hospital admissions. It will take some time to roll out the availability but the program which has started in 2009 will be fully available by 2012/13

Question of the Week
"I have a disabled son who in 2010 would like to go to university. My husband and I have always helped him get ready for school each day and we again are here to help him when he returns as he need help with some of his personal care and with other aspects of his life. We are trying to find out if there would be any help available for him should he go to university?"

Answer : The Government recognises that English students with a disability are likely to have additional needs and therefore the Disabled Students' Allowances provide extra financial help and are available on top of the standard student finance package. The Disabled Students’ Allowance does not have to be repaid. The Allowance is available to eligible students who are studying full-time, part-time and also postgraduate students can apply.

The money can help pay for;

  • Specialist equipment to enable study.
  • A non – medical helper, such as a note taker, reader or carer.
  • Extra travel costs such as a disabled person may incur.
  • Miscellaneous costs such as tapes, Braille paper, etc.
There is a lot more information about the Disabled Students' Allowances on the website: http://www.direct.gov.uk and search for Disabled Students Allowances.

We hope you have enjoyed reading this and "see you next week".
