Care NewsCounsel and Care have found that more and more people have been calling their advice line with reference to relatives and friends who are lonely or isolated. There are many befriending schemes in the UK run by varying organisations from national ones to small, local organisations. Counsel and Care have now launched VitalLinks with the objective that all such schemes register with VitalLinks so that "friends" can be found for more lonely people. For further details of VitalLinks go to Counsel and Care's website at: http://www.counselandcare.org.uk The Oldie magazine has uncovered a study by the Society for Companion Animal Studies which reveals that two thirds of old people's homes don't allow residents to keep pets. The Labour MP, Nick Palmer, is using a 10-minute Bill to force care homes to take pets. Everyone in England between the ages of 40 and 74 years will be invited for a free health check in order to help reduce deaths from diseases such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes and kidney disease. Such health conditions affect four million people across the UK and are responsible for a fifth of all hospital admissions.
