Care NewsAll new police officers in England and Wales will now receive learning disability and mental health awareness training. Mencap have been involved in developing the course and further details can be found at: The Association for Real Change (ARC) and Skills for Care have developed a toolkit to support people who wish to employ their own personal assistants. The toolkit covers such as employment, being a good employer, getting started, keeping your personal assistant, sorting out problems and other resources. The Health and Safety Executive charge for many of their publications but currently the content of around 230 can be downloaded from the website for free. Go to: The Dept. of Health has announced that over a ten year period at least 70,000 lives have been saved by the NHS Stop Smoking Services. The number of smokers in the population has dropped from 28% to below 21%. Interesting Information / Statistics"Wear It Pink" on 30th October is Breast Cancer Awareness day. To help to raise money Asda, who have been working with The Breast Cancer Campaign for five years, are selling a pyjama set, a t-shirt, a pair of Wellies, slippers and underwear which when sold, they will donate 40% to the Breast Cancer Campaign and 60% to Breast Cancer Care. So keep a lookout in your local store. Similarly, Debenhams are selling in addition to underwear and tee shirt the money box and an ipod cover and earphones. So far over nine years Debenhams have contributed £1.9m to the Cancer Campaign.The largest retirement village in the UK has opened in Nottingham. It is a joint venture between Nottingham City Council, Nottingham Primary Care Trust, The DOH and the ExtraCare Charitable Trust. There are 327 homes within the village designed for active residents to those who need 24 hour care from the age of 60 years onwards. The village is on a 24 acre site and has 18 health and leisure facilities, a restaurant, IT suite and a greenhouse. Property is available to rent or buy.
