Freedom of Information documentation shows that social workers take more than the national average with reference to sick leave. The average number of sick days per year is approximately 12, the national average is 7.4 days.
Currently there are 2,700 vacancies in the profession which it is suggested is prompting major pressure on the service.
The London Borough of Hounslow recorded the highest number of days of sickness of 28.3 days per annum followed by Somerset at 27.8 days and Coventry with 19.2 days.
Eighteen months ago as a result of the introduction of the new Mental Capacity Act, the Power of Attorney system was changed to the new Lasting Power of Attorney. This LPA superseded the Enduring Power of Attorney which was in place.
Since the introduction of the LPA only 100,000 people have agreed to the LPA and to date 1500 complaints about the process have been received.

A new post has commenced in Suffolk for an elderly lady with Emphysema. Care Manager is Jackie on 01603 281914. Wage is £592.00pw Inc.
Sadly over the holiday period we had 6 people die at home. A special thank you to the care staff who were with them. Special messages of thanks have been received from the families with reference to these carers.
During the snow we managed to open every day but at times due to the difficulty of actually getting to the office, which is at the end of a country park, we did have a skeleton staff. If you had trouble getting through to the office by phone, please accept our apologies.

Question of the Week"I live alone and I have not been able to get out to pay my bills in the recent cold weather. I am a little worried that my electricity and gas will be cut off. I have phoned the companies but have not been able to get through. Can they cut me off?"
Answer : Energy companies are sympathetic to people who are unable to pay their bills and do not want to cut any person off in the cold weather that we are currently having. You should however keep trying to contact them to explain your situation. If you continue to find that you cannot get in touch with them, you could ring your local Social Services office or your local Age Concern and explain your situation to them and ask them to contact the companies concerned on your behalf. They will need your customer number and other details so make sure you have your bills to hand when you call them.
The Social Fund
People on low income sometimes have expenses that they have to meet but because they are on a low income they are unable to meet these expenses.
The Social Fund is in place to help with these expenses. The expenses are categorised into two areas, Discretionary and Regulated.
The Discretionary Social Fund provides for three expenses namely:
- Community Care Grants.
- Crisis loans.
- Budgeting loans.
- Cold weather payments
- Funeral expenses
- Winter fuel payments
