The NHS has launched a Credit Crunch Helpline for people who are suffering from stress as a result of the hard financial times. The number is 0300 123 2000 and lines are open 8.00am – 10.00pm seven days a week.
Health advisors are in place to listen, offer practical advice and guide people to resources which may be of help.
Hospital Car Parking
If you have strong views about the cost of hospital car parking when you either have an appointment or are visiting someone, you may wish to respond to a consultation document that is seeking people's views on car parks up to 23rd February 2010.
Suggestions are that for inpatients:
- Free parking to all visitors of inpatients should be in place.
- Free parking only for visitors to inpatients who have had a long stay in hospital.
- Free parking if you have a number of outpatient appointments
- Placing a cap on charges for priority outpatient groups who attend regular hospital appointments.

Most mobile calls to the Deptartment of Work and Pensions re. benefit claims will be free from 18th January. The national number for Benefit Claims is 08000 55 66 88 and applies to the following phone companies:
- O2
- Orange
- Tesco Mobile
- Vodafone
- T-Mobile
- Virgin Mobile
(Calls to claim benefits and state pension use 0800 numbers, and are already free to customers using BT land lines. But 12 per cent of UK households use only mobile phones).

Interesting Information / Statistics
Question of the Week"I like writing letters and have pen friends in several countries. However, I find my sight is not as good as it was and I know that my writing is suffering as a result. A friend told me that you can buy writing pads that have raised lines so that you can feel them and keep your writing straight. But my friend did not know where to buy the writing pads from, do you?"
Answer : The RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) sells A4 writing pads where each page is embossed with horizontal lines which you can feel. The cost for a 50 page pad is £4.11 inc. vat.

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) defines a disabled person as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
- Substantial means neither minor nor trivial.
- Long term means that the effect of the impairment has lasted or is likely to last for at least 12 months (there are special rules covering recurring or fluctuating conditions).
- Normal day-to-day activities include everyday things like eating, washing, walking and going shopping.
- A normal day-to-day activity must affect one of the 'capacities' listed in the Act which include mobility, manual dexterity, speech, hearing, seeing and memory.
People who have had a disability in the past that meets this definition are also covered by the scope of the Act. There are additional provisions relating to people with progressive conditions.
The DDA 2005 amended the definition of disability. It ensured that people with HIV, cancer and multiple sclerosis are deemed to be covered by the DDA effectively from the point of diagnosis, rather than from the point when the condition has some adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
