Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley has advised the House of Commons that one in five of people age 65 today will need care costing more than £50,000, which could force many to sell the family homes. The answer would be to develop a funding system for adult care and support that offers choice, is fair, provides value for money and is sustainable for the public finances in the long term. The Commission on the Funding of Care and Support have the terms of reference that they will consider a range of funding ideas, including both voluntary insurance and partnership schemes.
Part of the role of the Commission would also be to consider how an individual's assets can be protected against the cost of care.
£1 in every £3.00 of charity funding comes from state sources. It is estimated that this amounts to £13bn per annum.
Many charities throughout the country are bracing themselves for the grant cuts that will be made in the current economic crisis.
In papers throughout the UK in the last week examples have been given of services provided by the voluntary sectors that may be reduced, severely reduced or lost altogether. These include:
- Lunch clubs
- Outreach programs
- Employment schemes for people with mental health or other disability problems.
- Support schemes for socially isolated older people
- Voluntary transport schemes
- Free school transport for disabled children
- CAB
- Neighbourhood Watch
- Obesity support and help organisations.

- South Wales for a gentleman with MS Care Manager is Sarah Wright, weekly wage is £638.00 inc.
- In Norfolk for a lady suffering with a terminal illness. Care Manager is Katie Plane and the weekly wage is £635.00 inc.
Interesting Information / Statistics
The Ceiling Hoist Users Club at: http://www.chuc.org.uk promotes the interests of people who need to use hoists and in particular people who use ceiling track hoists. One of the services they offer is a list of hotels that have accommodation with a ceiling track hoist and they have information that is also relevant to accommodation and facilities that are overseas.Question of the Week
"I have a friend who is wheelchair dependent but likes to keep as independent as is possible. One of the problems she has is with her underwear in that she finds it difficult to get into and out of her knickers. A side fastening item of such clothing would be a great help to her. Do you know if such a garment is available?"
Answer : There may be several other companies which make similar garments but one I have come across is Discretely Different. This company sells side opening briefs. Both side seams are sewn with a soft popper tape. The cost per pair is £8.99 to £9.99 dependent on the size. Sizes range from size 8 to size 28.

Passengers who require special assistance at Gatwick Airport should provide such information either to their airline or travel agent at least 48 hours before they fly. Currently only 30% of passengers who require specific help book the help they need in advance.
