Care News

The Government is discussing proposals which would increase the allowance paid to people in care homes to £20.45 per week from £19.60. This is the amount that the Government feels is an appropriate amount for publicly funded residents to have to spend for their personal use. e.g birthday/Christmas presents, personal toiletries, clothing, trips out, stamps, etc.

Age Concern have made the following comment; "This is not enough to pay for the level of dignity or the standard of living older people in care homes deserve."

Age Concern suggest that a fairer figure would be in the region of £40.00pw.

CSCI have published a list of information that care home providers must publish in their service users guide. It includes:

  • A description of the standard services they offer.
  • The terms and conditions under which they provide accommodation, provide food, personal care and if available, nursing care.
  • The total fee payable for the services above, the further information re the cost of providing nursing care should it become appropriate and how their bills are to be paid.
  • Any additional services over and above those should also be made clear in respect to the service and the charge.
  • If charges differ between privately paying residents and publicly funded residents, these must also be made clear.

Admiral Nurses are a specialist NHS branch of nursing that provides help, advice and guidance to people suffering from dementia and their families.

Not all areas have these posts in place, but you can check with your local PCT to find out if there are Admiral Nurses available locally.
