Care News

Personal care is free in Scotland but the Secretary of State for Health, Patricia Hewitt, has said that the government is not proposing to move to a system of free personal care in England as she believes it is not affordable. (Source Share – February)

Fees that social care providers have to pay to CSCI have been frozen until at least April 2008.

Residential Care Homes
There are proposed changes to residential care charges as from April 2007. The main proposed changes are:

  • The level of personal expenses allowance to rise to £20.45 per week.

  • The capital limits to £13,000 (lower limit) and £21,500 (upper limit). These new rates will apply automatically to home care charges.

  • There are other recommendations on the three page document on the DOH website and the department is asking for comments to be submitted before 28th February.

Lord Norman Warner has announced his retirement from the Dept. of Health, which he joined in 2003.

However, Able Community Care remembers Lord Warner when he was Director of Social Services in Kent. This was in the early 1990's and he and his team were at the front edge of the then new state of "care in the community".

During that time Able Community Care ran a conference about the "new world that was going to offer choice of how and where you wanted to be cared for", and Mr. Norman Warner, as he was then, kindly agreed to be one of our speakers at this event.
