Care News
With effect from April 2008 all people over the age of 60 and disabled people who are eligible will be entitled to free, off peak bus travel anywhere in England.Currently free bus passes are restricted to travel within a local authority funding area though some reciprocating authority agreements are in place.
The Disability Rights Commission has closed. It was established in 2000 to improve the situation for people with a disability. The work of the Commission will now take place within The Equality and Human Rights Commission. For more about the Disability Equality Duty go to website: www.dotheduty.org
From 1st October 2007 the earnings limit for Carers has been increased from £87.00 per week to £95.00 per week. This is after expenses such as income tax and NIC have been taken into account.
Power of Attorney has changed this week as a result of the Mental Capacity Act. The LPA, Lasting Power of Attorney will supersede the current arrangements. However, EPA, Enduring Power of Attorney, set up before October 1st, will still be valid.

Interesting Information
The Oxford Mail newspaper reports that more than £3m of NHS cash is wasted every year in Oxfordshire because of elderly people staying in hospital whilst waiting for social care to be arranged. Last month, 40 people stayed at the county’s nine community hospitals for an average of seven weeks until council funded care services were found for them. The average bed cost in the community hospital is £208.00 per day.Caremark domiciliary care franchises are being advertised. £29,500 ex. vat plus working capital..
