Care News

Additional older people to be protected from abuse
Thanks to lobbying, older people who commission their own care with local authority funding will receive equal access to protection from abuse under the law.

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Bill aims to protect older people from abuse by creating a list of named individuals who are barred from working with vulnerable groups.

Local authorities will now have a duty to inform "direct payments" users of the new scheme. (Source - Help the Aged)

Criminal Records Bureau
The total number of Disclosures issued for the period June 2005 to May 2006 was 2,829,078.

Two care homes to close
Wootton House, Broomhill, Sheffield is running at a loss and currently cannot find anyone to take over. The home is run by Sue Ryder Care.

The Sandcastle Home, based in Hunstanton, Norfolk and run by the BREAK charity for children and adults with special needs, is also set to close. Costs have doubled in the past three years mainly due to the cost of providing care in line with CSCI Standards.

The Independent Living Group operates approx. 40 nursing homes in the South of England. The Group is currently up for auction at a £100m+ tag.

In-House News

Potential new posts have been visited in London, Norfolk and Berkshire.

Risk Assessments/Reviews/Visits have taken place in Wales, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

A "gardening surprise" has been sent to one of our carers who recommended a new client to us. Our reward for such recommendations is a surprise of either the gardening variety or the edible sort!

Interesting Statistics

More than 1.1m people of pension age carried on working last year. This is the highest level since records began in 1992. This equates to 10% of pensioners.

However, there are over 7 million retired women, which is 63% of all those who are retired.

As at 31st March 2005, 48,900 adult supported residents (council) were placed outside their local authority area. This represented 18% of the total council supported residents in England.

300,000 people are currently residing in institutions with no alternative and no right to choose to live in their own home.*

Nearly 70% of local authorities admit that they are only able to provide support to people whose needs are at the highest levels.*

The UK has 9,400 people who are over one hundred years of age.
