Caring For People With Alzheimer's Disease

Currently in the UK 66% of people with dementia are cared for in the community. Most of the care is given by their families saving the Government over £6billion pounds per year.

However, many people are cared for by private home care agencies offering from a few hours care per week, to agencies such as Able Community Care who offer a one to one live-in carer scheme which enables people with the advanced form of the illness to be cared for safely, happily and securely in their own home.

The following cameos are of anonymised clients to whom Able Community Care has provded live-in care services, thus enabling them to remain living in their own home and community.

• Wilma who is now aged 81 and living in Essex. Our live-in carer scheme began for Wilma in 2003 and since that time a regular rotational system of liked carers has been provided. Wilma has a social life; she attends clubs and continues with some of her hobbies assisted by her carers.

• Lena, now in her nineties began receiving a continuous, live-in carer package in 2002. Lena, who lives in Greater Manchester, has seen her illness progress to the stage where she requires total care with her personal care, her domestic care and social interaction. Regular live-in care staff attend her in her home and she feels comfortable and safe with them.

• In 2005 we began providing a live-in carer scheme for Quentin who was in his early eighties and wished to remain living in his own home near his family and friends.

  A regular rotational system of live-in carers enabled Quentin to remain in familiar surroundings, family relationships to continue and friends who could pop in as before. Quentin died in 2009 age 88 years old.
