SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2002

National Care Standards

The National Care Standards were due to be introduced in April of this year. They were later postponed to July, then to September and now we have been advised that the Introduction will be in January 2003.

The National Care Standards will relate to the provision of care that companies like ourselves provide. We have given our thoughts regarding the Consultation Document, but as yet we do not know what the final document will say. It is hoped that the live-in care sector will gain exemption from some of the proposed requirements, especially those where implementation would result in some cost consequences.

Recently the National Care Standards, which had already been introduced for residential homes had to be revised because so many homes were closing and the number of care beds was decreasing at an alarming rate. We hope that when the final National Care Standards for our sector of the care industry are published, that they are reasonably workable and do not put the cost of care up by more than has currently been anticipated.

Travel at 50+

When you reach this age, travel both for work and pleasure can get cheaper! For example National Express have an Advantage 50 Discount Coachcard which costs £9.00. This will give savings between 20% & 30% off any normal fares.

At age 60 you can obtain a Senior Railcard which gives concessions of almost 33% on most train journeys.

Contact your local National Express office for details.

Electric Blankets

Every year electric blankets cause over 2000 fires. The reasons are:

  • We do not think to have an electric blanket serviced. This should be done after the guarantee expires and at appropriate intervals after that.

  • People notice a little scorch mark on the blanket, a frayed flex or worn material and think it doesn’t matter.

  • Electric under blankets are not switched off before getting into bed.

  • Using blankets, which do not conform to British Standards (always look for the kite mark) Buying a cheap blanket can be dangerous.
Continence Services

From time to time we write about subjects for which there should be an equal service provision across the country but often this is not always the case.

The NHS Continence Service is an example of this.

For people whose continence problems cannot be cured you should be offered products to help you manage your problem.

There are many products which are efficiently and effectively supplied but there can be a problem regarding the supply of absorbent pads.

They are given to you free of charge but sometimes due to financial restrictions you may be told you do not qualify because your condition is not severe enough, there is a waiting list or you can only have a set number per day.

If you know of any person who is having problems, advise them to contact The Continence Foundation who will be able to give advice about whether it is worth protesting and also help with related issues.

Shopping made Easy

Many of us have more than one supermarket in the area in which we live. However, if you have a disability, which one is the most suitable to make your shopping more of a pleasure than a chore? If you would like to find out, contact your local supermarkets and ask the following questions. Their answers may help you decide who will benefit from your custom.

  • Is there a toilet with wheelchair access?

  • Have you a wheelchair that I can borrow and do you have trolleys especially designed for use with a wheelchair?

  • If I go on my own, will you have a member of staff who can accompany me to help with my selection of goods?

  • Will there be a member of staff to help me pack at the checkout and then be able to take my shopping to the car?

  • If I arrive by taxi and I do not want to pay to keep it waiting, do you have the facility for me to order a taxi in the store when I am ready to leave?

  • If there is a petrol station at the supermarket and are staff available to help me fill up my car?

  • Is there a home delivery service?
Here's to happier shopping!

Mr Kipling - Who hasn’t eaten his cakes?

Advertising literature tells us that 50% of UK households have eaten one of his cakes. Cakes such as his Fondant Fancies, Battenburg Cakes or his Apple Pies.

Mr Kipling began his bakery in 1967 when most housewives were either making their own cakes or buying them from a local bakery. Supermarkets were becoming more common so Mr Kipling's idea was to produce his cakes, to be purchased in supermarkets, as a cake to be wholly enjoyed by one person. His advertising phrase "Exceedingly good cakes" became a standard catchphrase.

Currently more than 64 million Mr Kipling Apple Pies are sold each year.

In 1999 they made 36 million mini Battenburg cakes and the bakeries can make 864 French Fancies a minute!

Cakes are now exported to America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Canada and the Middle East. Do You Remember the Coconut Ice your Mother used to make?

We recently found a website which had the traditional recipe for coconut ice : Coconut Ice Recipe... It brought back fond memories for some Able staff so we thought you may like to have the recipe...

  • Caster sugar 1lb
  • Milk a quarter of a pint
  • Dessicated coconut 5 oz
  • A few drops of red food colouring
Lightly grease a shallow 8inch by 6 inch tin. Slowly dissolve the sugar in the milk. Bring to the boil and boil gently for 10 minutes or until the temperature reaches 116C (or 240F) on a sugar thermometer. Remove from the heat. Add the coconut.

Spread half the mixture into the tin. Put a few drops of red colouring in the remainder and pour over the first layer. Cool and then mark into squares. Cut when cold.

Stains!

Curry, coffee, tea, chocolate and tomato sauce stains.
The Tefal website gives some advice on how to remove these stains:

  • Curry - rinse with cold water and dab with a mixture of equal parts of hot water and glycerine (you can buy in any chemist). Leave for half an hour and then wash normally.

  • Coffee, teas and chocolate - if the item is silk or wool, apply a rag soaked in 1/3 alcohol and 2/3 cold water. On coloured cotton apply a water/alcohol mixture of 50/50 then some lemon juice. On synthetic fabrics tea stains can be cleaned with water with lemon juice added, then rinse.

  • If you want to get chocolate stains out using your washing machine try applying pure glycerine to soften the stain, leave for a few minutes and then machine wash.
Can't find a book to read?

There are currently 4700 libraries and 693 mobile library vans in the UK which provide 129 million books to lend.

60% of the population have a library card and every two weeks approximately 10 million people visit their local branch library or use the mobile library service.

Helpful tips

  • Don't place flowers next to fruit as the fruit emits a gas which prematurely ages the flowers.

  • A bowl of vinegar will remove smoke odours.
Finally a thought and a joke!

"If water is heavier than air, how do rain clouds stay in the sky?"

"What did the grape say after being hit by a car?..."
"Nothing, it just gave out a little wine!"
