What Do You Do With Your Gazette?
Apart from our carers and clients who automatically receive a copy of the Gazette bi-monthly, we have a lot of requests for regular copies from a wide range of people and areas.
We print 2500 copies each time. All of which are distributed by the end of the eight week period.
So what do you do when you have read yours? Let us know by either telling us when you call or emailing to: Ablemg@aol.com.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Friendly Restaurants, Public Houses and Snack Bars.
It is very annoying to go out for a social evening and then to find that although the venue you have chosen is disabled friendly in many respects it is not really suitable.
We have recently come across a website, where you give the area where you want to eat or drink and you are provided with details of disabled friendly establishments in that location
So, before you go, you can telephone and make sure that they can cater for your specific needs.
The website is
http://www.yourlevelbest.com

CSCI Inspection
Following our recent inspection from the CSCI we can now advise you that the inspection report is now a public document.
This means that you are able to view our report on the CSCI website at
http://www.csci.org.uk
If you would like a copy of the report you can also contact us.
Similarly, in a few weeks, the inspection report of the Scottish Care Commission should also become a public document and we will let you know when this is available.
The Be-Ro Flour Home Recipe Book
During the 1920's Be-Ro flour produced a little cookery book. Slim in size, it was available if you bought Be-Ro flour. Many of our readers will have had this little book or can remember their Mothers using it.
It was a good basic cookery book giving recipes for scones, tea loaves, biscuits, pastry, cakes, puddings and batters.
Now in 2006, this little book is still available, still recognisable and can be purchased for £1.25 payable by either cheque or postal order made out to Be-Ro Recipe Book and obtained from The Be-Ro Kitchen, PO Box 100, Blackburn, Lancs. BB0 1GR.

Nursery Rhymes
Mary Mary Quite Contrary
This well-known nursery rhyme is believed to have referred to Mary Tudor who was the daughter of King Henry VIII.
Mary was a staunch catholic and the "garden" referred to was the graveyards, which were increasing in number due to the deaths of those who proclaimed the Protestant faith.
The silver bells and cockle shells allude to instruments of torture. The "silver bells" was an instrument, which crushed thumbs between two hard surfaces as the screw was tightened.
The "maids" were a device, which beheaded people and sometimes took several attempts before the unfortunate person was actually beheaded.
London Bridge is Falling Down - but which one?
The first London Bridge was built in about AD43. It was renewed several times over the next thousand years when it was either "falling down," washed away by a flood or damaged as part of an invasion by the Vikings.
A stone bridge was built in 1176, taking 30 years to complete. In the middle ages the bridge held approximately 140 shops and many houses. In 1825 another new bridge was built as the old one could not cope with the traffic and this was widened in 1902.
In 1970 this last bridge was sold to Lake Havasu City, Arizona and the current replacement bridge was opened in 1973.
Max Faktor
In the 1870's Max Faktor was born in Poland. His parents had ten children and they could not afford to educate all their children formally.
When Max was eight years of age it was his turn to take up an apprenticeship and he was sent to a dentist/pharmacist. He spent several years mixing potions and eventually, in Moscow, he opened a shop selling his own creams, potions and fragrances.
In 1904 he took his family to America and at the World Fair in St. Louis in 1904 he began to operate under the name of Max Factor.
He was also a maker of wigs and had an ambition to provide his products to film stars. So with this vision in mind he moved his family to Los Angeles in 1908.
In 1914 he created a make up especially for film stars that would not crack or cake on their skin. This product was enthusiastically sought and bought.
Film Producers rented the wigs when making westerns and part of the rental agreement was that his sons were given parts as extras. This would enable them to keep an eye on the wigs and how they were looked after and used.
In the 1920's, the public began to buy his products on the promise that every girl could look like a film star just by wearing Max Factor.
Increased Prescription Costs
With effect from the beginning of April the prescription charge will rise to £6.65, a 15p increase. Prepayment certificates will increase to £34.65 for four months and £95.30 for 12 months.
Water Shortages - What can you do to help?
It seems that every week we are advised that water shortages will affect millions of us this summer.
Is there anything we can do that will help? Are there little things that if we all did them, would make a difference?
Our local water company has given us these ideas to save water:
- Use a bowl for washing vegetables and dishes rather than under a running tap.
- Don't leave the tap running whilst brushing your teeth.
- Fix dripping taps.
- When you want a cold drink, be prepared, have a jug of cold water in the fridge rather than running the tap until the running water reaches a colder temperature.
- Take a shower rather than a bath. A 10 minute power shower can use a third less than the average bath.
- Wait until you have a full load of washing, or use the half load button on your washing machine. Similarly with your dishwasher if you have one.
- Use a bucket and sponge when washing your car instead of a hose.
Crime Statistics
When applying for insurance, for example, the cost of your policy may depend on the area in which you live and its crime rating.
If you wish, you can easily find out the official crime statistics for your area by going to
http://www.crimestatistics.org.uk
. This will give you the details for any area of the country.
Apparently, the safest place to live is in the County of Surrey, which has 65 crimes per 1000 people. National average is 113 per thousand people.
Did You Know?
That throughout the world over 70% of the population wear second hand clothes?
We All Need Iron
If you are feeling tired or lethargic, lack concentration, feel faint at times, even a little breathless and other people remark on how pale you are looking, it may be that you are not getting enough iron in your diet.
Iron in a diet is essential for a healthy lifestyle and it is relatively simple to make sure your body is absorbing sufficient quantities.
To make sure you include iron rich food in your daily diet eat food such as: lambs liver, lean beef*, sardines or baked beans in tomato sauce, green leafy vegetables, boiled eggs, wholemeal bread, nuts and seeds.
Eat reasonable amounts of these foods daily to keep you healthy.
* The darker the meat the more iron it contains.
Special Thanks
On Easter Bank Holiday a local authority rang us speculatively with an acute problem they had. Ethel Mansaray was able to assist immediately and everyone would like to thank her for literally turning out at a moment's notice.
Special thanks also go to Stephen Aston for his sensitive help at a very difficult time and to Pauline Githiomi for her extra special care at a recent placement.
