JULY-AUGUST 2007

Smoking

From July 1st the Health Act bans smoking in offices, factories, taxis, pubs and in any enclosed place where someone else is working.

An exemption from the smoking ban is a workplace which is someone's home.

However, this only applies to the resident or their visitors and does not apply to care staff working in a person's home.

Simply put, Care Staff must not smoke in any of our clients' homes.

Old Car to Dispose of?

From January this year, manufacturers became responsible for taking back old vehicles which are no longer of any use.

A nationwide network has been set up to accept the vehicle without charge. Not all cars and vans on the roads are covered by the network schemes but the majority are.

There are two main providers of the service and these are;

http://www.autogreen.org
Tel. 0800 542 2002

http://www.cartakeback.com
Tel 0845 257 3233.

Lost Money?

There are millions of pounds in dormant bank or building society accounts. Accounts where the person has moved on, forgotten they had an account or died. Simply the bank/building society has lost touch with their customer.

If you think that you, or someone you know has a dormant account somewhere then you can contact one address for a bank account and another for a building society account and find out if this is the case.

For dormant bank accounts contact:

The Dormant Bank Account Unit,
British Bankers Association,
Pinners Hall,
105-108 Old Broad St,
London EC2N 1EX.

In the first instance you may like to call them on 020 7216 8909 for advice.

If any of the accounts are possibly in a building society then you need to contact:

The Building Societies Association
3 Savile Row,
London W1S 3PB.

Cosmetics from a Victorian Dictionary

This is a title of a book compiled by Lee Jackson and can be obtained by going to http://www.amazon.co.uk

The book covers much about Victorian Life and the following come from Water and Cosmetics for the Face.

"Very greasy and oily skins will be the better for being washed with wine (all those of France and The Rhine) about once a fortnight.

An excellent lotion is a wineglassful of fresh lemon juice, a pint of rainwater plus five drops of rose water. Keep this lotion well corked and used from time to time, it will protect the colour of the skin.

Flabby skin will derive benefit from using the following at intervals of eight days: Mix equal parts of milk and brandy made from corn and wet the face with this mixture using a soft towel after having washed and before getting into bed. The results will not be instantaneous but after about a year the skin will have become sufficiently strung up, firm, smooth and fine."

Can You Knit or Crochet to help Build a School?

FacilitAid is a fundraising organisation which is helping to build primary schools in the central African country of Burundi.

One of the ways in which they are raising funds is by the sale of Burundi Bears.

The Burundi Bear idea is being supported by WI organisations throughout the country. You can either send your bears to FacilitAid or you can sell them (knitted or crocheted by you) for £1.00 then send the money on to FacilitAid.

Each £1.00 raised buys four building bricks for a school.

The patterns for a Burundi Bear can be obtained from FacilitAid, PO Box 50, Monmouth. NP25 4YB.

Recently we saw a "Burundi Bear Team" in Norwich City Football Club strip. How you would like to "dress" them could be your choice or you can just follow the instructions.

Summer Feet

In summer we like to wear lighter footwear, but for people with conditions such as...

  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Diabetes
  • Leg ulcers
  • Orthotics
  • Swollen feet
  • Stroke disability
...it can be difficult to go out to look for a summer sandal and then to find one that actually fits your feet.

Cosyfeet is a company which makes sandals and lighter footwear for people with the above conditions.

The footwear can be made from stretchable fabrics, which are particularly of interest for people whose feet swell during the day, from breathable and natural fabrics and can be made with minimal seams.

If you would like to see what this company has to offer you can visit their website at www.cosyfeet.com

Or telephone them on 01458 447 275 and to write for a catalogue the address is Cosyfeet hip to toe, The Tanyard, Leigh Road, Street, Somerset. BA16 0HR.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb is plentiful now and although most of us think of rhubarb crumble, historically rhubarb has been the basis for cake recipes.

Oxburgh Hall is a 15th century moated house in Norfolk. It is part of the National Trust and the following recipe is given to their visitors:

Oxburgh Rhubarb Cake

  • 8oz self raising flour
  • 5oz of caster sugar
  • 5oz of margarine
  • 9oz rhubarb, finely diced
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 3oz of sultanas
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1tsp of brown sugar for the topping
Grease and line a 7inch cake tin.

Pre heat oven to 180C, 350F or Gas 4.

Sift the flour and salt.
Rub in the margarine.
Stir in the caster sugar.
Mix in the eggs, rhubarb and sultanas.
Turn into the prepared tin and spread to the sides.
Sprinkle the brown sugar over the top.
Bake in oven for 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes until well risen and golden brown.

Allow to cool on a wire rack. Enjoy!

Are You Entitled?

Many people are missing out on benefits to which they are entitled.

Sometimes the reason people do not claim is because they do not want to feel disappointed or embarrassed if they are unsuccessful.

However, a new website "entitled to" which can be found at http://www.entitledto.co.uk gives you a simple calculator to work out how much you can possibly claim.

You do not need to disclose any personal information to run the check. The calculator is set at the benefits rate for 2007-2008.

If you think you may have a claim give this website a try.

Attendance Allowance

The Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people age 65 or over, who have any illness or disability and need help with personal care.

This benefit can now be applied for online or you can download the application form to complete and return in the post.

Go to http://www.direct.gov.uk and 'search' for Attendance Allowance.

If you have poor sight and not so nimble fingers but like to sew...

For most people pins always escape when you are sewing. Normally this is just a nuisance but if you have reduced sight or less agile fingers and hands then it becomes more of an aggravation.

Recently we came across the following aids: a stand alone magnetic pin cushion and a magnetic pin cushion that can be put on your wrist. Although they are primarily pin cushions, they can also hold small screws.

The stand alone pin cushion is 4.25 inches in diameter and comes with its own pins. The wrist pin cushion also comes with pins. The wrist strap cushion is £7.14 and the stand alone pin cushion is £8.65, both are inc. of vat.

For a brochure containing further information and other useful sewing aids contact Whitemore and Thwaytes on 01768 863895 or go to their website at:

Royal Mail - free postage for blind people

At the beginning of the twentieth century the first blind Cabinet Minister was Henry Fawcett and he also held the post of Postmaster General. In 1906 he was involved in the legislation which gave blind people reduced postage rates.

This was due to the fact that using Braille meant using heavier weight paper and thus your letters/correspondence would cost more to post.

Since 1965 Royal Mail has been providing free postage for blind people.

Interesting Information/Statistics

There are more than 8000 carers aged over 90yrs
(Source: "nursing older people").

There are approximately 3000 Macmillan Nurses throughout the UK. The name of their organisation has recently been changed from Macmillan Cancer Relief to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Over 400 products are now available from the Red Cross online. Items include rise and recline chairs, scooters, chair raisers, sticks, bathroom and bedroom aids.

The DOH has just published a Guidance document, 12 pages in total, entitled Heatwave: supporting vulnerable people before and during a heatwave: advice for health and social care professionals 2007.

This can be downloaded from the http://www.dh.gov.uk website

St John Ambulance treated 5,054 people during the hot weather during the 2007 Flora London Marathon, ensuring that most runners went on to finish the race. Seventy-three were sent to hospital for further treatment.

Ricability

Ricability is the trading name of the Research Institute for Consumer Affairs (RICA). It is a national research charity dedicated to providing independent information of value to disabled and older consumers.

For example they test household products and give unbiased opinions about the product specifications in relation to their use by an elderly or disabled person.

It has also collected measurements on 179 models of car and you can read a series of summarised information guides for choosing a car with suitable adaptations for motorists with particular needs, e.g. driving with arthritis or driving after a stroke.

To see if Ricability can help you or just to read for interest the contact details are: Ricability, 30 Angel Gate, City Road, London EC1V 2PT.

Jokes of the Month

Two fishermen are out sailing when suddenly a hand appears in the sea. "What's this?" asked the first fisherman, "It looks as if someone is drowning!"

"No," explained the second fisherman, "It's just a little wave."

I was driving down the road and I saw two packets of crisps. I stopped and ask if they wanted a lift and they replied "no thank you, we are Walkers."

Finally, if you would like our current brochure please give us a call on 01603 764567.
