Keep Safe

Electricity can maim and kill therefore when using or working with it we should always treat it with respect.

For example never let anyone repair or rejoin an electrical cable for you and do not run any cables under the carpet where you will not see them becoming worn. (The cable if it raises the surface of the rug or carpet may cause you to fall).

Many people leave their phone charger plugs in the wall and switched on, always unplug them when not in use to avoid an accident.

Never have more than one adaptor in a socket and if a plug or an adaptor feels hot when you touch it, take care and do not use again.

Similarly, if your plug, adaptor or socket is showing brown scorch marks.

Never put a hot water bottle in a bed where an electric blanket is in use and this applies to either an under or over blanket.

Antibiotics

You can buy antibiotics "over the counter" in the High Street but consider the following facts;

  • Antibiotics will NOT get rid of colds, most coughs or sore throats.

  • Taking antibiotics "just in case" can kill your good bacteria, the sort you need!

  • Antibiotics are used to treat bad bacterial infections.

  • Taking too many antibiotics unnecessarily can make them less effective for when you do need them.
Our Food Rubbish

Everyday in the UK we throw away 7 million whole slices of bread, 2.8 million tomatoes, 700,000 whole eggs, 300,000 unopened packets of crisps, 700,000 whole bars of chocolates and unwrapped sweets.

Support for young disabled people setting up a business

You've looked at all the options and you've decided that getting a job is not for you. It could be that you don't like the idea of having someone else telling you what to do or that you have a great idea for a business and really want to get it off the ground. But can you do it? What obstacles will you have to overcome to get your business up and running?

Well first off, you may be interested to know that a higher percentage of disabled people are self-employed than non-disabled people (18% of the disabled work force compared to 14% of the non-disabled workforce!) So you aren't alone in wanting to go it alone and become an entrepreneur.

Starting your own business is a big step and you'll need to spend a lot of time researching and planning before you go ahead. Connexions Direct can help you get there by pointing you in the right direction.

There are several organisations that might be able to help you but a good place to start is the government's Access to Work scheme.

They can offer you grant aid for things like paying for a communicator if you are deaf or specialist equipment or alterations to your work premises.

Under the Access to Work scheme, disabled people in self-employment get all 'approved costs' paid for. They also give practical help and advice to potential disabled entrepreneurs. Access to Work is based in your local Job Centre so contact them there.

The Disabled Entrepreneurs Network (DEN) is specifically aimed at giving support and encouragement to disabled people with a desire to start their own business. Along with general advice and support they provide self-employed disabled people (as well as those seeking to become self-employed) with:

  • Networking opportunities.
  • Information services.
  • A source of specialist advice to help you get into self-employment.
If you want a taster of what it's like to be your own boss, why not look out for the Young Enterprise scheme in your area? Visit their website at http://www.disabled-entrepreneurs.net

Young Enterprise is a national education charity with a mission: to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise.

Young Enterprise runs six programmes, each for a different age-group - from 5 to 25+. These are run on a "learning by doing" principle.

Visit their site at http://www.young-enterprise.org.uk

The Prince's Trust is for 18-30 year olds who want to start a business. It is a new generation of entrepreneurs helping to shape the UK enterprise economy of the future, through their Business Start-up programme.

Interesting Facts

The average UK household is estimated to use around 330 glass bottles and jars annually – a total of over 7 billion per year.

FAST

Think FAST and save lives by dialling 999.

A heart attack, a stroke can happen at any time and the sooner medical help is given the better are the person’s chances of recovery.

To find out if anyone is having a stroke or heart attack use the FAST Test:

  1. Face – Can they smile, does one side of the face droop?

  2. Arm – Can they lift both arms, is one weak?

  3. Speech – Is their speech slurred or muddled, can they understand you?

  4. Test- Check for all three symptoms and if one or more of the symptoms are occurring dial 999.
Current Government Statistics
  • There are over 20 million people age 50 and over.
  • 1 in 2 aged 50 own their home outright.
  • 3 in 5 women aged 75+ live alone.
  • 1 in 5 older workers are self employed.
  • 3 in 10 men aged 80+ own a mobile phone.
  • 2.8m people aged 50+ provide unpaid care.

To Salt or Not to Salt?

Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure. High blood pressure is sometimes known as the "silent killer" because most people experience no symptoms and do not realise they have it.

Adults need no more than 6g of salt a day and 75% of the salt we need daily is already in the food we buy or make ourselves.

When you shop, check labels to see how much salt is in the product.

This can be when buying bread, breakfast cereals, tinned vegetables, readymade meals, sauces, etc. If the product has a label which says there is more than 1.5g of salt per 100g, this is high.

If the product says there is 0.3g of salt per 100g, this is low and what you should be aiming for.

The benefits of eating less salt are:

  • Cutting down on salt reduces blood pressure, whether or not your blood pressure is high to start with.

  • When your blood pressure goes down, your risk of developing heart disease and stroke goes down too, whatever your age.

  • If you have high blood pressure, cutting down on salt can help to lower your blood pressure in weeks.
It is the Simple Things!

It is the simple things in life that sometimes can make a difference to a person's independence. Small things such as the wide range of disability aids that can now be purchased.

There are aids such as a Canpull which is designed for opening ring pull cans. A Grippimat to help open jars. Graters with suction feet and the Combi Reacher which allows a person to pick up things around the house.

For people with poor hearing there are such items as an under pillow vibration alarm clock and for people with failing memories there are Reminiscence Activity Packs.

There are many companies which sell these products but if you visit http://www.handyhealthcare.co.uk you can see a large range of the different aids that are now for sale.
