Both the NHS and Social Services provide aids and equipment to enable a person to have continued independence at home.

In order to receive such equipment from Social Services you will need to be assessed by an Occupational Therapist from Social Services.

Items such as tap turners, a kettle tipper, raisers for furniture, bath seats, raised toilet seats, hoists to help you get in and out of bed and hand rails can be provided.

Adaptations can be made such as changing the position of electrical sockets, light switches and door entry systems.To see if you are eligible for any of the above contact your local Social Services whose number will be in your telephone directory.

From the NHS you can receive elastic stockings, continence pads, wheelchairs, other walking aids, hearing and vision aids and communication aids.

The referral system for these is through your General Practitioner.

The Blue Badge Scheme

Going out and about if you have poor mobility may mean that you are eligible for the Blue Badge Scheme.

The Blue Badge Scheme provides a range of parking concessions for people with severe mobility problems who have difficulty using public transport. This enables badge holders to park close to where they need to go.

The scheme operates throughout the UK, though the application process differs slightly in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. In all instances contact your local Council.

You are automatically eligible for a badge if you are over two years old and either;

  • receive the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance,
  • are registered blind,
  • receive a War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement.
If you are not automatically eligible you will have to have an assessment which will see if you;
  • have a permanent and substantial disability which means you cannot walk, or which makes walking very difficult,
  • drive a motor vehicle regularly, have a severe disability in both arms, and are unable or would find it very difficult to operate all or some types of parking meter.
