Cumbria with a population of just under 500,000 is expected to see more residents reaching the age of 85 years per head of population that the national average for England by 2031. The number of people of pension age will be 20.3% of the population.

Social Services office in Cumbria can offer help, support and information and the many Age Concern branches in the County offer welfare, support and a range of activities such as: befriending services, lunch clubs, day centres, nail cutting services, telephone friends service, and some may be able to offer a shopping service by taking your grocery order on the phone and ordering it online from one of the supermarkets who will deliver it to the home. Usually a charge of around £5.00 is payable to the supermarket.

Many older people live in their homes without realising that they may have a significant fire risk. e.g. an old electric fire which “still works”, a central heating boiler which has not been serviced for some time and Age Concern Cumbria working with the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are able to organise fire safety visits to be carried out by a member of the Fire Brigade to advise and help keep a home safe from fire.

Many older people do not wish to leave their home to move into residential care and opt for a home care service to help them retain independence at home. However, there may come a time when hourly care services are not enough to enable you to remain at home because there are periods of the day or night when the risk of being alone and a problem occurring is high.

Able Community Care can help you stay in your own home when you reach an "at risk" situation by providing a live-in care service to help with the domestic running of a home, assist with personal care and provide companionship.

Here are some comments from our clients in the north-west of England regarding what they like about their live-in care packages from Able Community Care:

  • "The full time companionship that the carers provide."
  • "The quality of care and the right age of the carers."
  • "Very convenient and a great help."
