In 1980 a Norfolk company began to provide domestic services to clients who wanted either a cleaner, a babysitter, a gardener, a waitress or a chef. The company, now Able Community Care, planned to provide a range of domestic services to serve both professional organisations and private individuals.
However, in the first three months that the company operated, many enquiries came from people who needed a Housekeeper/Carer to look after an elderly relative, a Mum, a Dad, an Aunt or cousin. Elderly people who were too frail to manage on their own but did not want to move out of their own home into a residential home.
The families concerned were unable to provide the amount of care that was needed so contacted Able Community Care in the hope that a solution could be found.
On a trial basis, four older people were offered a live-in Housekeeper/Carer service whereby a Housekeeper/Carer would move into their home for a fortnight at the end of which, another person would move in for the next fortnight and it was our aim to provide a rota of returnable, liked members of staff. The offer was that we would trial it for three months to see if the continuity could be achieved.
At the end of three months, the four people were happily in their own homes, the selected Housekeeper/Carers were returning on regular rotas and everyone was very happy.
Since that time Able Community Care has only provided live-in care services: Long term as an alternative to moving into a residential home and short term respite care for people coming home from hospital, their family carers taking a holiday, etc.
Today Able Community Care provides its live-in carer services not only in Norfolk, but throughout mainland UK and in The Channel Islands.
In 1980 the company was started by Angela Gifford and Angela still runs the company today.
