Multiple Sclerosis (MS) In London

For sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis in London today there is help and support from The MS Society, a national organisation which has MS branches throughout the UK. Within this organisation, the Greater London Region has 29 branches offering support, advice, social activities, newsletters, therapies, etc.

Multiple Sclerosis was first officially diagnosed around 1849 but it is thought that the disease was actually in Holland in the 14th Century. Lena Horn and William Hartnell (Dr. Who) are amongst the number of people who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

The current estimate is that there are approximately 2.5 million people throughout the world who have MS. In the UK alone there are estimated to be around 100,000 sufferers.

Greater London has many Specialist Nurses for MS and the area covered by the Specialist Nurses cover: Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Bexley, Bromley, Ealing, Harrow, Greenwich Lambeth, Lewisham, Hounslow, Islington, Richmond and Southwark. In addition there are MS specialist services in the intake areas of many of the hospitals.

The disease is especially prevalent in younger adults and in women in particular, and as MS progresses many people feel that they will end the latter days of their lives in a residential home setting.
