Every week around 50 people in the UK are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It is a disease which is usually diagnosed when people are in their twenties and thirties. Many MS sufferers require high levels of care to remain living independently in their own home and for many, a live-in care scheme provides the level of care that is needed.

Able Community Care is a local company which provides live-in carers to people who are suffering with Multiple Sclerosis in Norfolk and Norwich. Here's some recent feedback from Carol*, one of our long term clients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis in Norwich: "Carers are looking after me, cooking, assisting me with personal care and making sure I get the best I deserve. Yesterday I had plaice in parsley sauce with broccoli, carrots and potatoes followed by ice cream and a cup of tea." We have been providing live-in carers to Carol in her own home since June 2003.

Ben* has been receiving a continuous, live-in care package from Able Community Care since 2002 and has two regular care workers who return to him on a fortnightly rota basis.

Live-in care staff working with people who have Multiple Sclerosis can get involved in the activities around the County that provide social activities and specialist care for people with MS. Opportunities such as the swimming pool that can be accessed for people with MS through the Mid Norfolk MS Society, the Drop In Centre in Great Yarmouth or the new Exercise and Reflexology classes that are also now being run in the town.

The local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society in North Norfolk has a holiday chalet which is available to its members and organises local social events. For details of these and other Norfolk branches visit: http://www.mssociety.org.uk.

Keeping up with the Facebook age, Consultant Neurologists from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital have advised and helped to set up the social networking site Shift.ms, which is a community for young people affected by Multiple Sclerosis. Users can contact each other, share and interact via the site which can be found at: http://www.shift.ms.

For a friendly chat about your care needs, please phone our Norfolk and East Anglia Care Manager Katie Plane on 01603 281917. Alternatively, our Office Manager Judith Tye on 01603 281919 will also be happy to speak with you.
