There is no national register with details of how many people have Multiple Sclerosis in the UK, but as a result of several surveys over the last few years the number is estimated to be approximately 85,000.

The prevalence of people who have the disease in Suffolk is approximately 135 per 100,000 of the population.

Able Community Care, a local company, provides live-in care staff to people who are suffering with Multiple Sclerosis and would like to remain living in their own home.

Live in care staff working with people who have MS can get involved in the activities across Suffolk that provide social activities and specialist care for people with MS.

Many events take place at local branches of the MS Society around Suffolk, branches such as:

  • The MS Society of Newmarket and District which organises social events and has a regular newsletter for its members. Local contact is 01638 750 352

  • The MS Society based in Bury St Edmunds and covering the local area also has a regular newsletter, organises yoga classes, coffee mornings and has a branch drop in centre. Like all MSA Branches they offer support and information. Tel 01284 723110 for further details.

  • In Ipswich the branch holds meetings on the 2nd Friday of each month and everyone is welcome. The venue is at the St Raphael’s Centre in the town. Telephone 01473 828731 for details.

  • The North Suffolk branch holds its regular meetings at the Community Centre in Wangford and social events are organised for members. Telephone 01493 393999 for information.
SHIMS stands for Suffolk Help in Multiple Sclerosis which is a Self Help Group run by people with MS for others with MS. SHIMS meets twice monthly at the Water Lane Leisure Centre, Water Lane, Lowestoft. And some of the activities on offer include:
  • Lunch
  • Guest speakers
  • Reflexology
  • Outings
  • Sailing
  • Ten Pin Bowling
For further details of this organisation take a look at their website at: http://www.waveneyshims.webeden.co.uk

In Suffolk there are specialist MS Nurse Specialists, for details contact any of the above branches.

Here's some feedback from clients who have MS about the care provision of live-in care packages from Able Community Care:

  • "Able's service enables me to live independently."
  • "Nice relationship with carers."
  • "Able's service is essential for my needs."
